“This engaging book is about the Spanish Priory of Navarre, one of the many territorial units that over the centuries constituted the economic and social foundations of the Order of St John the Baptist (these days generally referred to as the Order of Malta). It constitutes an attempt to understand the Priory of Navarre on many levels, both as an element within an international military-religious Order, as well as an element within a local/regional context. Anna K. Dulska focuses on the figure of the Knight Fra Martín Martínez de Olloqui (1383–1435), but this is not a biography or a narrow study. Instead, the author takes us on an intimate journey as she untangles the way in which people, management, and environment interacted with each other, and shaped the character and fortunes of the Priory, and of those who in some way were involved with, or were affected by it.”—Emanuel Buttigieg, Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History, University of Malta
