ENTER THE LABYRINTH OF GOETHE'S FAUST
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe inherited a centuries-old legend about a reputed magician who bargained with the devil-and transformed it into one of the most ambitious works in world literature.
Faust: My Soul Be Damned for the World, Volume II presents an extensive examination of Goethe's life, creative development, and monumental reinterpretation of the Faust tradition. It explores not only the celebrated Faust, Part One, but also the vast and enigmatic Part Two, whose shifting scenes, classical allusions, symbols, philosophical questions, and historical references have challenged readers for generations.
Beginning with Goethe's early encounter with the legend, E.A. Bucchianeri traces the long evolution of the drama through its preliminary sketches and successive forms to the completed masterpiece. Goethe's biography is placed beside the creation of Faust, revealing how personal experience, intellectual controversy, scientific study, political events, and cultural change entered the developing work.
Volume II investigates:
- Goethe's life and the creative history of Faust
- The earliest surviving sketches and developing versions of the drama
- Faust, Part One and the tragedy of Gretchen
- The complex structure and symbolism of Faust, Part Two
- Goethe's engagement with history, philosophy, science, and astronomy
- Alchemical and occult traditions within the drama
- Goethe's interest in Freemasonry and esoteric symbolism
- Classical, biblical, medieval, and literary parallels
- The moral consequences of ambition and forbidden knowledge
- The author's interpretation of Goethe's warnings to future generations
- The literary, theatrical, musical, artistic, and cultural legacy of Goethe's masterpiece
Supported by more than two thousand footnotes, the study relates individual passages and controversial incidents to Goethe's life, historical events, scientific theories, cultural movements, and an extensive range of literary and religious sources.
This is neither a simple biography nor a conventional scene-by-scene guide. It is an interdisciplinary investigation into how Goethe brought the Faust legend to what critics have called its almost unapproachable zenith.
Volume I traces the historical Faust and the development of the legend through the early Faust books, folklore, Marlowe, puppet theatre, and Lessing. Volume II enters Goethe's extraordinary intellectual world and examines the masterpiece that reshaped the legend for modern culture.
For readers of Goethe, German literature, comparative literature, drama, philosophy, cultural history, music, art, and the history of ideas, Volume II offers a richly documented journey through one of Western literature's most challenging and inexhaustible works.
