The story follows Max Woulfe from birth through to his eventual death. The story opens with Max struggling through an unfortunate upbringing.
Max forms a relation with a young girl which enables him to cope with a troubled youth, the relationship ends in tragedy sending Max into a world of violent prosecution.
Max builds a robust skill set which enables him to find justice where lawful justice has failed him. Finally free of what he sees as rightful prosecution Max finds no peace.
Luck allows Max to move on to what he hopes will be a new future, Max settles in a small town and sets about restoring two old houses with troubling pasts. Neighbours and friends see a Max Max himself cannot recognise. He sees himself as a troubled, violent man, a persona he endeavours to keep hidden in the past, which he guards stubbornly. But there is no escape for Max, and the past he tries to escape continues to haunt him.
Events force Max to visit past skills and prosecute those who would try do him harm. Max is a most unforgiving man given to great violence, paradoxically, Max also owns a persona that sees the struggles others endure and he sets out to lend a helping hand.
Max puts an end to a vast criminal empire and in the process gains celebrity and notoriety that he does not want and he flees, hoping to start again. Relationships Max built soon call Max back and he resumes his life and follows a more peaceful existence.
The story ends as Max finally finds peace, and passes on, his friends finally learning of the past he guarded so stubbornly.
