Protein is found throughout the body—in muscle, bone, skin, hair, and virtually every other body part or tissue. It makes up the enzymes that power many chemical reactions and the hemoglobin that carries oxygen in your blood. At least 10,000 different proteins make you what you are and keep you that way. Protein is a macronutrient that is commonly found in animal products, though it is also present in plant-based sources, such as nuts, beans, and peas.
Your body does not store protein. It needs to be replenished daily. Your body turns on average over 250 grams of protein every day in maintaining your skin, hair, nails, blood cells and bones. Therefore, your daily diet needs to focus on getting enough protein, typically an increase over your current amount.
